Digital Print do's and don'ts

How does it work?

Step 1: Design Set-up

Your logo or design artwork is uploaded to the digital printing system, where it is positioned, prepared and programmed for accurate printing across your chosen box style.

Step 2: Job Set-up

A series of test prints are carried out to confirm precise box alignment, color accuracy and print clarity. Adjustments are made to ensure sharp, high-definition results before production begins. Digitally printing onto black or dark color boxes usually requires a white panel to be laid down under the printed color design to ensure good color depth.

Step 3: Print & Dry

A high-speed print head moves back and forth across the surface of each box, laying down CMYK ink in fine, controlled passes to build your full-color design. The process works similarly to an inkjet printer, but on a far larger and more advanced scale. Each box can take up to 10 minutes to print (depending on box size and design). Each box is dried before packing.

Step 4: Finished Result

Your boxes are complete, now featuring your logo or design in vibrant, high-resolution full-color printing with exceptional detail and smooth gradients.

FAQs

Here are some FAQ's regarding printing. If your question isn't answered here please take a look at our full FAQ's page.
Can I print a logo with gradients or shading?
No, foil is a solid branding technique so it is not possible to include gradients or shading, but we can produce a design like this using multi-color digital printing.
Can I print my multi-color design if it is set to RGB, HEX or Pantone colors?
Multi-color digital printing designs need to be set to CMYK digital references so the machine can select the exact colors needed to print. Sometimes we can do this for you depending on the logo/design. Upload the artwork you have when submitting your quote and we will advise the next step.
Can I bleed print over the edges of the box?
Digital printing onto stock boxes cannot bleed ink over the edges of the box lid. If you are interested in an all-over print, this is possible for orders over 1,000 boxes as a custom order. The paper needs to be printed before it is used to cover the gift box board. Visit our Bespoke page for more information.
Can I have a gloss effect on my digital printing?
Yes - it is indeed possible but this is priced at an extra cost. Check our Gloss Screen/Digital Print page via the techniques menu to see more information regarding this option. We don't have automatic pricing on our on-line quotation system as the cost depends on the glossy area of the design. If you want to add a glossy finish add this requirement as a comment in the notes section when you submit your quote to progress an order.
My design includes small text or details, will this work for digital printing?
Yes, multi-colour digital printing is perfect for designs with small details, letters, lines etc - as it will print the image/design exactly as presented in the digital artwork file.
Can I get a printed sample box?
Yes, we can produce a physical printed sample, but please note that it can be costly due to the set-up involved. To keep things efficient, we provide a free digital proof of your logo on your chosen gift box style. This is supplied for your approval before we proceed with your bulk order, and most customers find it gives a good visual representation of the final printed result.
Why is it called CMYK?
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key. In printing, "Key" refers to black, because the black plate is the one used to add the key detail, definition and alignment for all other colors. Although black doesn't start with a K, the term comes from traditional printing where the black plate served as the "key" plate that the other colors were aligned to.
Is my digital design really only made up from 4 colors?
Yes, it really is made from just four colors. Digital printing uses tiny dots of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK) to build your design. The dots are so small that the eye blends them together, creating smooth tints, gradients and even photographic-quality images. If you view the print under a linen tester or magnifying glass, you'll be able to see the individual CMYK dots that make up the final design.
